You may have seen the new blue t-shirts some Hay Tire Pros employees have been wearing this summer. (Shout out to our friends at T&T Sportsman’s Shop for doing such a good job with the shirts!)
Our shirt is worn here by Alex, one of our courtesy shuttle drivers.
The shirt’s back features a “Hay” version of an actual 1931 South Carolina license plate. The state motto on the plate is “The Iodine State” – so what’s that all about?
That slogan was part of a marketing campaign started in the late 1920’s by the S.C. Natural Resources Commission. They were trying to boost the sales of the state’s agricultural products like fruits, vegetables, and even milk by emphasizing the high levels of iodine that they contained naturally. Iodine deficiency was known then to lead to goiter (enlarged thyroid) and other mental and physical conditions. By the 1940’s iodine was being added to table salt, so the campaign was retired. It was not very successful in increasing sales of S.C.-grown products, but it makes for an interesting story!
So why 1931? We chose that year for our shirts because it’s the year our founder, Henry Hay, Jr. was born. Happy October Birthday, Henry!
