As consumers we have certain expectations. For instance, we expect service in a fast food restaurant to be brusque, incompetent, and anything but fast. Anytime we call a repairman, we expect the final bill will be higher than the estimate and the repair will be finished in twice the estimated time. All of us have our own variations of these stories… When we encounter an employee who is pleasant, knowledgeable, and efficient we are surprised. If the employee volunteers an apology because things didn’t go quite right, we are shocked. Why?
The retail experience many of us dread and fear the most is car repairs. Many of us would rather visit the dentist than take our car for repairs (no offense to our dentist friends) – and with good reason. For most of us, our vehicle is a significant financial investment. We want to act responsibly and maximize the vehicle’s life while living within our budgets. Submitting our vehicles and our wallets to the scrutiny of a repair shop makes us feel uncomfortably vulnerable. What little we know about our vehicle’s needs seems hopelessly inadequate to evaluate the list of recommended repairs that often confronts us. We are unsure whether this repair shop’s priority is to be truthful or to get rich at our expense.
Experiences with less-than-scrupulous repair shops have given the whole industry a reputation for dishonest dealings. In many cases, there seems little recourse and no accountability for a bad experience. In large chain shops, it may take several phone calls or visits to reach a person who even cares that one of their many customers is unhappy.
Consumers in all the above situations deserve better – that includes YOU! You should not be treated as though these employees are doing you a personal favor, or as though you are an inconvenience to them. Your questions should be answered thoroughly; and your concerns should be treated seriously, even by an employee who’s heard them all many times before. You should not be forced to blindly accept what the employee wants to sell you. You should be thanked for your patronage and invited to return, not shoved aside as soon as the cash drawer closes.
